Nine local businesses, four schools and two apartment complexes received monetary awards today totaling $12,500 to recognize outstanding success in recycling in 2007. The awards were presented at the Second Annual Recycling Awards at the site of one of last year’s recipients - Downtown Joe’s, 902 Main Street. Councilmember Peter Mott presented the cash prizes and trophies made of recycled glass to the winning recyclers.

“This incentive-based awards program rewards schools, businesses and apartment complexes for not just doing the right thing, but for doing it extremely well. We hope the public recognition and financial reward will encourage others in the community to engage in proactive recycling programs and save money on their garbage bill at the same time,” said Kevin Miller, Materials Diversion Administrator for the City of Napa.

The prize money was allocated based on field surveys to determine the best recyclers - regardless of size - utilizing the City’s single-steam program. The field surveys measured the amount of non-recyclable trash in the recycling bins, and the amount of recyclables in the trash. With the results combined, the lowest scores determined the winners in each category.

Funding for the prizes comes from Napa Recycling and Waste Services as part of its contract with the City of Napa, and from competitive grant funding from the State Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling, secured by the City of Napa.
