Darren Drake, City of Napa Fire Marshal, was named California Building Officials’ (CALBO) “Fire Official of the Year” at the annual CALBO conference in San Diego. Drake was recognized as a leader who has worked tirelessly to bring fire and building officials together.

“We are very fortunate to have someone of Darren’s caliber as our Fire Marshal. He takes a lot of pride as our leader in Fire Prevention, ensuring that his bureau provides timely and high quality service to our community,” said Fire Chief Tim Borman.

Over the past year, Drake collaborated with Steve Jensen, the City of Napa Chief Building Official, to facilitate adoption of the new 2007 California Building Codes, a process that included presentations to local builders groups to explain changes from the 2001 to 2007 California Codes. Drake and Jensen also facilitated the combining of two City boards into the Building and Fire Code Appeals Board, allowing for better coordination and resolution of difficult life safety issues.

Drake’s background includes over 30 years of experience in fire services, 20 years as a chief officer.  He has worked for the U.S. Forrest Service, and in fire service in Park City, Utah and Pismo Beach, California, before joining the City of Napa Fire Department in February 2003. During the past year, Drake has also served as President of the Northern California Fire Prevention Officers organization.
