Safe disposal of hazardous waste is easy in Napa

Thursday June 21, 2012

Proper disposal of hazardous wastes is important for public safety and environmental health. For Napa residents, it's easy to get rid of unusable or unwanted wastes - you can drop them off, free of charge, any Friday or Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 889A Devlin Road in American Canyon. The facility accepts all types of hazardous waste except radioactives, explosives and ammunition. Some specific wastes, like motor oil, oil filters, latex paint, auto batteries and antifreeze can be recycled every day at many locations. Check the recycling guide in your phone book yellow pages or see the online version here

For Napa County and City of Vallejo households, there is no appointment required and no charge to drop of household hazardous waste. For highway safety, there is a legal limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip. Napa and Solano County businesses that generate less than 220 pounds or 27 gallons of hazardous waste per month may be eligible to use the “Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator” program at the collection facility. There is a charge for this service. Call (800) 984-9661 for information and an appointment.

It's also smart to reduce toxic waste from the start.

  • Buy the right product for the job.
  • Choose the least toxic product.
  • Buy only as much as you can use up.
  • Store products properly so they don’t become unusable.
